Journal Title: Записки з ономастики - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 18
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is the analysis of proper names of people’s business associations of different Ukrainian cities, formed by transonymization of mythonyms. The task includes a review of recent investigations and publications, the analysis of the use of different types of mythonyms for naming of objects of human activity, highlighting the main structural models and indication of the prospects for further research. The subject of research is qualitative and quantitative composition of ergonyms formed by transonymization of mythonyms, its structural, semantic and functional features. The object of the study involves more than 500 Ukrainian ergonyms, giving names to the objects of various spheres of human activities. The article dwells on the analysis of the ergonymization of mythonyms. The use of names of various objects of human activity, fixed in nine Ukrainian cities is illustrated by examples. Positive and negative associations caused by names are shown. All the names are divided into three main structural models: single mythonym, mythonym + appellative, appellative + mythonym. Ergonyms acquire new meanings in the process of transonymization of mythonyms. However, the background information is not always taken into consideration. So, as a result some ergonyms meaning can be illogical. Modern names should be taken into account to avoid repetition, good and bad experiences of use should be considered; before naming process it is worthwhile predicting their possible associations. Prospects for further research in this direction may include exploration of transonymization of other classes of onyms into ergonyms and their functioning under the influence of various extralinguistic factors which add certain alternations into the process of nomination.
