Establishing church schools in Uman county in the 1860’s

Abstract

Operating basic archives the article shows the activity of rural communities in Uman County of Kiev Province as to opening elementary public schools in the 60s of 19th century. The paper gives the samples of judgments produced by peasant congregations according to which villagers were obliged to maintain and issue salary to a teacher. It was found out that the texts of the judgments were typical. They differed in terms of villagers’ responsibilities in respect to issuing teacher’s salaries in rural schools; allocation of premises or buildings for schooling; heating and lighting. Contrasting judgments of rural communities for different schools showed that the higher teacher’s salary were issued where there was more land under taxation and more school-aged children. The amount of wages comprised of the funds from every arpent and charge from parents for every pupil. It is mentioned that during the active school building period in late 19th schools were organized in different places and then gradually new schools were constructed.
