Britain’s Participation in the Eastern European Policy of the European Union (1990-2016)

Abstract

The article presents results of research the problem of participation the UK in Eastern European policy of European Union during 1990-2016 years. Features of the European Union’s policy towards the post-Soviet countries of Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom’s role in this process are described. The influence of the Russian factor on the test vector of the European Union’s foreign policy, in particular, variable dynamics in Russian-British relations are represented. The role and interests of the UK in adoption the EU’s program «European neighbourhood policy» and «Eastern partnership» are analysed. The author argues that, in general, relations with the former Soviet countries had a secondary importance in foreign policy of the EU and the UK. Despite the significant strategic role of Eastern Europe region, the European policy has always been underestimated by both actors. Weaknesses the Eastern European policy of the EU as a component of its Common Foreign and Security Policy in the context of current crisis of European security system are indicated. Weakening of the British influence on the EU’s Eastern European policy is pronounced. It will have negative consequences for European integration aspirations countries of the region. Output of the United Kingdom from the EU due to the completion of the «Brexit» process will lead to the weakening of Eastern European States in their quest to become full-fledged members of the European Union. London will lose it most effective mechanism of cooperation with Central-Eastern states, which became or aspire to become members of the Community in the future.
