Estimation Of Vascular Age In Stroke Patients - An Easy, Non-Invasive, Bedside, Cost-Effective Tool For Predicting Future Stroke Risk

Journal Title: Journal of Medical Research and Practice - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 4

Abstract

This study aims to determine vascular age of stroke patients and compare it with their chronological age and to estimate risk factors responsible for stroke and their correlation with vascular age. It was an observational study carried over for a period of 18 months in a tertiary care center in Central India. Diagnosis of ischemic stroke was confirmed with computed tomography of the brain. Vascular age was calculated by Framingham score scale. Ninety-eight stroke patients meeting all inclusion and exclusion criteria were studied. Fifty-one patients were males and 47 were females with a ratio of 1.08. The average chronological age was 58.53 ± 13.60 and average vascular age was 74.96 ± 8.48. Vascular age was 16.43 years more than chronological age in stroke patients. Hypertension was found to be the commonest risk factor involved in our study. It was present in 68 patients (64.57%). Diabetes was the second most common risk factor present in 23 (23.46%) patients. Other risk factors include dyslipidemia (10.20%), ethanol use (9.18%), COAD (5.10%). Vascular age of ischemic stroke patients was 16.43 years more than their chronological age. Estimation of vascular age can be used as early screening tool for patients at risk of stroke, which will help to advice preventive strategies for future stroke prevention.
