A Study of Level of Awareness about Menopausal Hormone Therapy among Junior Residents

Abstract
Objectives To study the level of awareness about menopausal hormone therapy among junior residents working in Malabar Medical college using a questionnaire. Materials and Methods A questionnaire was given to all the junior residents working in Malabar Medical College to assess their awareness regarding menopause, its effect on the quality of life, menopausal hormone therapy, benefits and risks. It was stressed that the test is voluntary and would be conducted anonymously. The questionnaire comprised of 15 questions. There were no open questions and participants were asked to answer using either of the three options-yes, no, don’t know. The responses were analysed to find out the awareness level. Results Out of the 60 junior residents 50 agreed to participate and completed the questionnaire. Out of that 52% were females. The correct options regarding statements relating to menopause and hormone replacement therapy were ranging from 2% to 78.% which indicated low level of knowledge. Only 20% of them either prescribed or referred their patients for hormone replacement therapy. 20% of participants were aware of the latest recommendations about MHT. 24% were aware about the different routes of MHT while 40% knew about natural remedies. 32% thought that natural remedies were effective. This shows a low level of awareness. 40% thought that the knowledge imparted during the MBBS course was adequate. Conclusion The results suggest that there is a lack of knowledge and confidence in recognizing signs and symptoms of menopause and in identifying and prescribing appropriate management.
