Pseudotumor of Infancy– A Rare Presentation
Journal Title: Journal of Medical Research and Practice - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 5
Abstract
Pseudotumor of infancy is a rare cause of a benign, firm, fibrous neck mass in neonates and infants. The term pseudotumor is a misnomer as it is not a tumor but fibrosis of the muscle. Most commonly involves the middle or inferior third of sternocleidomastoid muscle, which joins the base of skull to the collarbone. This condition affects infants in the first few weeks of life. An infant usually presents with a visible or palpable mass, around 1–3 cm in diameter on the lateral aspect of neck within the sternocleidomastoid muscle. In some infants, the muscle is shorter on one side so these infants lie with their heads tilted and rotated to the other side. If diagnosed early and correctly, it can be managed conservatively without unnecessary investigations.
