Effect of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy for Gall Stone Disease on Motility of Stomach in Patients Presenting with Dyspepsia

Journal Title: Journal of Medical Research and Practice - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 4

Abstract

This study assesses the effect of laparoscopic cholecystectomy on the gall bladder and gastric motility in patients having gallstones presenting with dyspepsia as compared to patients with recurrent biliary pain with cholelithiasis. The study group consisted of 60 patients. Group A: 30 patients with recurrent biliary pain with cholelithiasis as controls. Group B: 30 patients with gall stones with dyspepsia. Gastric and GB motility were measured with ultrasonography pre-cholecystectomy and repeat gastric motility was seen post-cholecystectomy. Statistical analysis was done using Student’s t-test and Chi-squared test. In Group A, there were 14 (46.66%) patients having pre-cholecystectomy T50 < 30 min, while none in Group B had pre-cholecystectomy T50 < 30 min. Most of the patients, 28 (93.33%), in Group B had pre-cholecystectomy T50 from 30 to 60 min. The two-tailed P value equals 0.009, which is statistically significant. Post-cholecystectomy, in Group A improvement in gastric emptying time was statistically insignificant (P = 0.542), while in Group B the improvement in gastric motility was statistically significant (P = 0.001). 22 (73.4%) and 16 (53.3%) patients in Group A and B had normal gall bladder ejection fraction (EF) (>50%), respectively, P value calculated using Fishers exact test was 0.4497, which is statistically insignificant. There is delayed gastric motility in gallstone patients with dyspepsia which improves after laparoscopic cholecystectomy significantly. There is no association between GB motility and dyspepsia. There is relief in dyspepsia after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
