A Histopathological Review of Nephrectomy Specimens Received in a Referral Center in South Tamil Nadu

Journal Title: Journal of Medical Research and Practice - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 6

Abstract

Objectives Simple and radical nephrectomies are done for benign and malignant lesions of the kidney respectively. This study was conducted to find out the histopathological spectrum of diseases that were encountered in those received nephrectomy specimens and compare it with other studies. Methods Nephrectomy specimens both simple and radical that were received during our study period were included. Age, sex and gross measurements of the tumor were retrieved from the records. The slides were reevaluated by a panel of pathologists, classified, graded and staged and detailed discussion of those cases was done. Results Nephrectomy specimens constituted around 0.5% of all the specimens. Mean age at which nephrectomy was done was 28.7 years with a female preponderance. As our center is a tertiary referral center of south Tamilnadu, this value has a demographic significance. The mean age at which benign lesions were seen was 32 years with M: F: 1:9. Chronic pyelonephritis was the most common benign lesion seen in our study followed by benign cystic lesions. The mean age in the malignant tumor category was 25 years with M: F: 0.8:1. Wilm’s tumor in pediatric age group and renal cell carcinoma in the adult age group were commonly seen in the malignant category. Conclusion Histopathological spectrum seen among the nephrectomy specimens correlated with those available in the literature. Mucinous cystadenoma of the pelvis and clear cell papillary carcinoma – two rare tumors were diagnosed during our study period. Chronic pyelonephritis incidence had some regional variance.
