Ethical Dilemmas of Gender Affirming Therapy

Journal Title: Medicine and Philosophy - Year 2024, Vol 45, Issue 21

Abstract

Gender affirming therapy, which serves as a medical means to achieve the alignment of mind and body for transgender individuals, faces a series of ethical dilemmas in the process of its birth and development. These dilemmas include foundational existential issues and operational challenges, specifically involving questions of legitimacy, risk, accessibility, and restrictions. The emergence of these dilemmas has created a gap between the "truth" of technology and the "goodness" of ethics. This suggests that society should support transgender individuals through psychological empowerment on a personal level, public education on a societal level, and the establishment of regulatory frameworks on an institutional level. These efforts aim to help transgender individuals better integrate into society and achieve ethical inclusivity.
