ETHYL ACETATE EXTRACTS OF DATES (PHOENIX DACTYLIFERA L.) SHOW PROTECTIVE EFFECT AGAINST PATHOGENIC MICROBES

Journal Title: European Journal of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 7

Abstract

In the previous study, we reported dates are of high nutritional values including vitamin and mineral contents. In this study, we investigated the activity of dates against infectious microbes. We used ethyl acetate extract of three varieties of dates (Trounja, Lagou and Gounda) to study the anti-microbial activity. Our results demonstrated that the date fruits could be a very effective diet source against pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Of the three varieties of dates Trounja revealed highest anti-microbial activity compare to Lagou and Gounda. Interestingly, any of the date varieties could significantly inhibited at least two bacterial strains while all varieties showed the most significant growth inhibitory effects against Salmonella typhi. In contrary, all varieties exhibited the highest anti-fungal activity against Colitotrichum miosporodis while Trounja showed the maximum activity against Penicillium sp, Fusarium sp and Colitotrichum miosporodis compare to Lagou and Gounda. However, we could not get any significant activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, klebsiella pneumoniae, Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus sp. We determined the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Trounja, Lagou and Gounda were 64, 64, and 128 g /ml respectively against Salmonella typhi. The anti-microbial activities of dates prove the essence of date as a healthy diet source of natural antibiotics to survive against infectious disease.
