ETHYMOLOGICAL, ETHNOCULTURAL AND COGNITIVE ASPECTS OF THE UKRAINIAN MENSONYMS

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to identify etymological, ethnocultural and cognitive features of mensonyms of the Ukrainian language, to define the leading associations for the names of months. The objects of investigation were the cognitive components of the origins of the names of months in the Ukrainian language. The subject of the study is the codified names of months of the Ukrainian language and associative responses to these names. The result of the study is clarification of the origins of the names of months and classification of various associative responses to them. It was determined that the names of months are not a closed system of onyms and their temporary markers are changing along with new key activities. Conclusions: every month is evaluated from the viewpoint of favorability / unfavorability for the respondent; it possesses evaluative characteristics. Time is perceived through significant events in the life of society. While ‘veresen’ used to have motivational components about it in the time when the names were shaped, related to the plant heather (‘veresk’), the calls of migrating birds, or the threshing of grains (‘vereshtaty’), in the modern society verbal responses to the mensonym ‘veresen’ are predominantly represented by the oikodonym ‘school’. The names of months are not a closed and uniform system of onyms, the associations are represented by purely temporal markers as much as by fitonyms, zoonyms, cosmonyms, oikodonyms, mythonyms. The study’s practical application is adding to the associative dictionary of the Ukrainian language.
