Etiopathogenesis of obesity

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 9

Abstract

Obesity is a disease that stems from positive energy balance. If energy intake exceeds energy expenditure, the result is weight gain. Several genetics, environmental and hormonal factors influence the energy balance.Genetics factors have the influence on appetite, basal metabolic rate, neuropeptides, hormones, adipocyte function and spontaneous physical activity.Obesogenic environment facilitates the development of obesity (energy dense food, sweet beverages, diet deficient in fiber and calcium). Also an important in etiology of obesity is low physical activity.Recent studies have shown that sleep disorders can contribute to disturbances in production of leptin and ghrelin. It results in increase the incidence of obesity.
