Abstract

Polish Salvatorian, Rev. Prof. Tadeusz Styczeń, was an outstanding philosopher – ethicist. After a short introduction presenting the author’s personal relationship with Rev. Styczeń, it is shown, in what way life experience formed the path of Professor’s ethical reflection. At its center stood the issue of affirmation and defense of human dignity. Scientific cooperation with Karol Wojtyła/John Paul II was another important element in development of Fr. Styczeń’s ethical reflection. In the next part of the study Professor’s philosophical achievements within the current of personalist ethics are presented, with its fundamental thesis: affirmation is due to a person as a person (Persona est affirmanda propter seipsam). Following in the footsteps of his mentor, Karol Wojtyła, Rev. Styczeń developed an original theory of ethics as the theory both empirical (based on experiencing the morality) and normative. His personalism is particularly relevant at the moment, when, in various areas of the social and also Church life, the vision which puts human freedom, creative conscience, before the truth about the man, seems to gain growing popularity.
