Evaluation of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) clones tolerant to salt stress

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 11

Abstract

Salinity is one of the major environmental factors that lead to a deterioration of agricultural land and reduction in crop productivity worldwide. In order to effect of salinity stress on Alfalfa varieties an experiment was carried out in Dezful, Safi-abad Research Center as split plot in randomized complete design with 3 replications. Factors included: 4 levels of salinity stress (0, 50, 100 and 150 mmol NaCl) and 10 varieties of alfalfa. Result has shown that salinity, varieties and their interaction significantly affect the parameters such as: germination percentage, mean daily germination, Germination velocity coefficient, plumule and radicle length and dry weight. With increasing salinity of 0 to 150 mmol decrease germination percentage to 1.66%. This reduction in germination indicates Mesasersa variety is the most tolerant and Hamedani and Diablurdeh varieties extreme insensitivity to salinity, so they aren’t advisable to cultivate in saline soil.
