Evaluation of anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activity of Steri-Gen

Journal Title: The Indian Practitioner - Year 2016, Vol 69, Issue 9

Abstract

Background: Antiseptics are essential part of infection control practices. Faith Innovations has launched Steri-Gen Disinfectant Generation System based on the novel Sterigen technology. The system generates neutral pH, stable Hypochlorous acid (HClO) along with a mixture of oxidants like hydroxyl anion, peroxide anion, oxonium ion etc. This mixture of oxidants and HClO is known as Sterigen Solution. Sterigen Solution is a high level disinfectant produced using water, Sterigen- C and electricity. Aim: To evaluate bactericidal & fungicidal action of Sterigen solution. Material & method: The solitary isolates of multi drug resistant test organisms Methicillin Resistant S. aureus (MRSA), K. pneumoniae, P. mirabilis, Ps. aeruginosa, E. coli & C. albicans isolated from hospitalized patients were included in the study. The disinfectant was evaluated by Suspension test qualitatively with contact time-1,3 & 5 minutes. Tests were performed in duplicate to ascertain reproducibility. Pre-fumigation and Post-fumigation decrease in bacterial load was also assessed. Result: Sterigen solution was an effective anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent for hospital use in dilutions upto 1:3.
