Evaluation of anti-ulcer activity of Clitorea ternatea Leaves (Linn) extract in Wistar rats

Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 3

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the antiulcer activity of Clitorea ternatea leaves (Linn) in experimentally induced animal models. In this study the leaves of Clitorea ternatea was extracted with petroleum ether, chroloform and ethanol. The preliminary phytochemical screening was also undertaken and it revealed that the plant extracts have alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides and steroids. Chloroform and Ethenolic extracts of Clitorea ternatea (Linn.) were investigated for gastric protective activity on pylorus ligation induced ulcer and ethanol induced ulcer models. A number of biochemical parameters such as gastric volume, pH of gastric content, ulcer index, free acidity and total acidity, dissolved mucous substances such as total protein, mucin were estimated and the extracts at a concentration of 250 mg/kg produced a protective effect on ulcer‐induced models when compared with the standard drug Omeprazole (20mg/kg, p.o.). Some of the antioxidant enzymes levels (glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase) were also determined. The result of present study revealed that ethanolic extract of Clitorea ternatea was more potent than the ethanolic extract when compared with the standard. From the results it can be concluded that the plant have potent antiulcer activity that may be due to the presence of flavonoids, tannins or antioxidants.
