Evaluation of Antimicrobial Activity of Solanum Xanthocarpum against Betalactamase and Biofilm Producing Microorganisms
Journal Title: International Journal of Novel Trends in Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 4, Issue 6
Abstract
The problem of the resistance to different drugs is increasing day by day. Therefore there is an urge to develop an alternative from natural products like plants to eradicate the multidrug resistance and betalactamase producing microorganisms. Present study was conducted to investigate antimicrobial activity of leaf extract of Solanum xanthocarpum against, selected pathogenic microorganisms. Extraction of the bioactive constituents from fresh leaves were individually performed using four different solvents, viz., methanol, acetone, petroleum ether and aqueous by hot process. The investigation showed that all the four solvent extracts exhibited varied degree of antibacterial potentials. The highest antibacterial activity was shown by methanolic and acetone extracts compared to other solvents against all the selected isolates. Antimicrobial activities were estimated by measuring zones of inhibition through hole-plate diffusion method, against the Enterobacteriaceae isolated from food samples. Among the 2 bacterial species, Escherichia coli were greatly inhibited and moderate anti-microbial activity was demonstrated with Klebsiella pneumoniae. The dose of 15 mg/mL of methanolic extract demonstrated significant zones of inhibition against E. coli. Thus, S. xanthocarpum could be utilized as a potential source of natural antimicrobials.
