Evaluation of apical foramen in canine human teeth

Journal Title: RSBO - Year 2004, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The variation of the position of the apical foramen added to the radiopacity structures of the bony area, it almost always hinders your identification through the exam of the x-rays, could alter the prognostic of the treatment. The aim of this work was to evaluate visual and radiograph the position of the foramen and the measurement when this not to position in the apex. 100 upper canine teeth were used. After the accomplishment of the endodontic access the teeth were explored with a K file #10 until your observation in the foramen, soon after the tooth was x-rayed and accomplished the measures with a digital paquimeter in the tooth and in x-ray.The results showed that 58% of the teeth presented curved roots, and in 22% the curve was for Buccal exam. In the x-ray analysis it was verified that in 64% the foramen was located in the apex, 44% already visually only met in the apex. With relationship at the visual distance versus x-ray was verified that there was correspondence among them in 43% of the cases, while in 12% of the cases the x-ray distance was 3 times superior the visual. In conclusion with the present study that the x-ray visualization of the foramen in the apex not always agree with the reality, should be taken in consideration the anatomical knowledge during the endodontic treatment.
