Evaluation of backfill corrosivity around steel road culverts

Journal Title: Roads and Bridges - Drogi i Mosty - Year 2013, Vol 12, Issue 3

Abstract

Corrugated steel plate culverts in connection with the location in the soil environment are exposed to risk of the soil corrosion. The paper characterizes the most important factor affecting formation of corrosion in the soil, i.e. resistivity. Tests of soil resistivity based on the geophysics electrical resistivity measurements (Wenner method) are presented. This method allows the soil resistivity measurement at various depths. The conducted experimental tests concerned the six culverts situated on different types of roads (national, provincial and local). All tests were conducted in two periods, i.e. summer and spring. The minimum resistivity of the soil in the vicinity of the steel culverts amounted to 30•m and it was established near roadway. The obtained results indicate the peril of the soil corrosion occurrence in the corrugated steel plate culverts, especially located on the national and provincial roads.
