EVALUATION OF BODY POSTURE IN CHILDREN WHO PRACTISE SWIMMING

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2014, Vol 30, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. The aim of the study was a comparative characteristic of body posture of children at school age who trained swimming in comparison with their peers who did not practise any sport.Material and methods. The research was conducted in 118 pupils of primary school, including 44 pupils who trained swimming and 74 non-training pupils, aged 11-13 (the average age of children was 12.1 years). The frequency and the difficulty level of training sessions depended on the age of training children. To evaluate the body posture in the sagittal and frontal planes a photogrammetric method was used. Body posture was evaluated in a free position.Results. The average values of angular parameters of anteroposterior spinal curva tures did not differ significantly between children practising swimming and their non-training peers. Length parameters, in turn, such as body height, total spine length (TSL) and the length of thoracic kyphosis (LTK), significantly differed. The biggest percentage of swimming children with no of asymmetry was observed in shoulder line angle (SLA) (70%), pelvic inclination angle (PIA) and UK parameters (slightly over 50%), while significant asymmetry in this group was most frequently observed in OL parameter (12% of children).Conclusions. The results of the research indicated slight differences in body posture of children practising swimming in comparison with their peers not involved in any sport discipline.
