SERUM CONCENTRATION OF VASCULAR ENDOTHELIAL GROWTH FACTOR IN SPORTSMEN

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 6

Abstract

Physical exercise has impact on many aspects of our lives. It is a well-known fact that regular exercises decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases and have positive influence on the locomotor system. In addition, physical exercises cause muscle fiber damage and induce non-specific inflammatory reaction, during which many substances among vascular endothelial growth factors may be released. The key event during the development of muscular system is angiogenesis, which is highly dependent on the family of vascular endothelial growth factors. The aim of the of this study was to determine serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF-A, VEGF-C, VEGF-D) in sportsmen. 50 healthy students of Wrocław University School of Physical Education, 19 to 25 years old, wee enmlled in this study. All of them wee regularly taking exercises. Blood was taken during routine laboratory test, run for sport medicine. Seum levels of VEGFA, VEGF-C, VEGF-D were assessed using Enzyme-Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay (ELISA). We found the range of serum concentration of VEGF-A, VEGF-C, VEGF-D to be very wide. This fact suggests that there are many inlerpersonal flucluations in serum concentrations of proangiogenic factors after physical exercise, which in turn may be influenced by additional modulation by other, unidentified factors. There is a need for further investigations to identify the factors which may have influence on serum concentration of angiogenic factors.
