PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE OF PROFESSIONAL SOCCER PLAYERS IN SELECTED YEARLY TRAINING PHASES

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. Good preparation of soccer players depends on significant number of factors. The aim of this study was to investigate exercise capacity of the first league soccer players from the ,,Odra Wodzisław” sport club before and at the end of the spring season.Material and metods. Fifteen soccer players (25.0±3.42 years, BMI=24.33±2.12 kg/m2 and 24.05±2.11 kg/m2 before and at the end of the spring season, respectively) were examined twice. During the graded treadmill exercise test performed until exhaustion, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), maximal heart rate (HRmax), maximal blood lactate concentration (LAmax), maximal running speed as well as lactate threshold (TLA) were determined. Moreover, heart rate (HRT) and running speed at the TLA were estimated.Results. There were no significant differences in results obtained at the two measurement points. Before and at the end of the season VO2max was 53.99±2.86 and 52.79±4.19 ml/min/kg, respectively. Additionaly, relative TLA expressed as percent of maximal running speed was similar in both measurements (76.19±8.26% and 76.91±9.47 %, respectively).Conclusions. Exercise capacity of the soccer players was low and did not increase during the spring season. Inappropriate training loads as well as demands inadequate to somatic characteristics of the competitors may be the reasons for the lack of improvement in exercise capacity, since no signs of overtraining were detected.
