FLEXIBILITY OF THE SPINE AND SELECTED JOINTS IN WOMEN PRACTISING HATHA YOGA
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2011, Vol 27, Issue 1
Abstract
The purpose of the research was to compare comparison flexibility of the spine and selected joints in women practising hatha yoga for a longer time as well as in women involved in other forms of physical activity.130 women aged 19-53 were examined. The experimental group consisted of 65 women practising hatha yoga and the control group - 65 women regularly participating in various forms of physical activity except for hatha yoga. The flexibility of the spine in the sagittal plane was measured via Otto and Schober's test. To assess the mobility of the spine in the frontal and transverse plane, the SFTR method was used. The flexibility of the glenohumeral joints was measured with the use of the zip fastener test. The flexibility of the hip joint within the scope of bending with the knees extended and extension was measured by tailored test. For global evaluation of the spine and hip joint mobility i within the scope of bending, the toe touch test was used.Statistically significant differences between the two examined groups of women were found after assessment of: flexibility of the spine within the scope of bends backwards, the mobility in the glenohumeral joints, the range of hip extension and the range of hip flexion with extended knees. The women practising physical yoga were characterised by greater flexibility of the hamstrings, the muscles of one's arms and shoulder girdle as well as the flexor of the hip joint, than the ones regularly taking part in various forms of physical activity. Moreover, the women practising physical yoga were characterised by greater mobility of the spine within the scope of bends backwards. Significant differences in flexibility were most frequently noticed in women aged 20-29. It may be thus stated that hatha yoga exercises ensure a proper flexibility of joints, improving muscle flexibility.
