Evaluation of granuloma fissuratum cases in removable denture wearers

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2011, Vol 61, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction. The mucous membrane of the oral cavity is not physiologically adapted to transmit occlusion forces. It can be relatively easily damaged by using incorrect or ill-fitting removable partial and complete dentures. Granuloma fissuratum may be an inflammatory complication of treatment in patients with removable dentures.Aim of the study. To evaluate the cases with granuloma fissuratum in wearers of complete and removable partial dentures.Material and methods. Eleven patients with granuloma fissuratum were examined. The patients had reported to the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry, Poznań University of Medical Sciences with the intent to change their removable partial or complete dentures to new prosthetic devices.Results. The results of the study evidenced that granuloma fissuratum occurred within the maxilla and the mandible, definitely more often in women (73%) than in men. Hypertrophic lesions of granuloma fissuratum in the maxilla, were observed mainly in the vestibular area of incisors and canines (36.5%) and in the mandible around the sublingual area (36.5%). In all the studied cases ill-fitting dentures on the denture bearing site and the presence of irritation by the denture flange were observed.Conclusion. Our observations confirmed that ill-fitting denture may cause granuloma fissuratum on the denture-bearing site.
