Evaluation of pH of substances used as intracanal medication in different vehicles
Journal Title: RSBO - Year 2009, Vol 6, Issue 3
Abstract
Introduction and objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the pH change promoted by the insertion of calcium hydroxide and iodoform associated or not to a vehicle – Carbowax 1000 – in three different solutions: distilled water, saline or alcohol. Material and methods: For this study, 50 ml of the solution were inserted in a glass beaker. One gram of the drug associated or not to the vehicle was progressively inserted into the solution (up to 10 g). After each insertion of the drugs, the pH of the solution was measured. Results: It was observed that calcium hydroxide promoted a basic pH (around 12),while iodoform promoted a neutral pH. Once iodoform is soluble in fat and in alcohol, pH values were lower when this drug was associated to Carbowax and acid pH values were found when iodoform was diluted in alcohol. Conclusion: It was concluded that calcium hydroxide promoted basic pH values and iodoform neutral pH values.
