Evaluation of pigmented lesions and methods of their removal

Abstract
Pigmented lesions are the result of the activation of melanocytes (melanosis) or an increased number of melanocytes (melanocytosis). Ultraviolet radiation is the factor that have the greatest impact on the induction of melanogenesis process. Pigmented lesions, in addition to wrinkles, are factors which have the greatest impact on the subjective perception of the human age. The most common pigmented skin lesions include: lentigines, chloasma and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. A critical factor in choice of methods for removing of pigmented lesions is the location of the melanin. To assess the depth of melanin, the Wood’s lamp or transepidermal spectrophotometric analysis are the most often used. The methods applied to reduce pigmentation changes include: lasers, dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, cryotherapy, chemical peels, surgical methods and lightening cosmetics and medicines. Effective and safe removal of pigmented lesions should primarily be preceded by a comprehensive diagnosis. A special attention must be paid to lentigines, which may suggest the early features of neoplastic lesions. Equally important as techniques and procedures used for the removal of pigmented lesions is appropriate prevention or reduction of exposure to UV radiation.
