Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2012, Vol 8, Issue 3

Abstract

Effective orthodontic therapy depends on appropriate co-operation of the whole team including an orthodontist, responsible for the entire therapy, a technician and an assistant. High precision and quality of orthodontic team members work at each stage determines good and lasting treatment effects. Setting up rules governing the relations between a dentist and a technician is a crucial condition of such work, which should rely on quality, trust and mutual respect and aim at achieving a common goal – successful treatment. The paper focuses on the evaluation of the quality of cooperation between orthodontists and technicians as well as on outlining major problem sources. Elimination of these problems makes co-operation more satisfying. A survey research was carried out among the participants of the 14th Convention of Polish Orthodontic Society in Warsaw in 2010. The research was based on the survey answers of the dentists and technicians. The surveyed are aged over 40, with the professional experience exceeding 10 years, big city inhabitants (above 100 thous. inhibitants). Both professional groups declared a long lasting work together. In general, both groups would appreciate their contacts. Both dentists and technicians pay attention on work precision as a well co-operation term. Main sources of problems in co-operation are bad communication, inadequate bad information and inadequate clinical and laboratory documentation. High quality of work, adequate information and appropriate clinical and laboratory documentation makes co-operation more satisfying and gives better treatment results. The co-operation of orthodontist and technician aiming at developing uniform procedures is necessary. (Orthod. Forum 2012; 8: 105-114). Received: 18.04.2012 Accepted: 26.06.2012
