Evaluation of the effect of CO2 laser radiation on root cementum

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2013, Vol 66, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction. The CO2 laser is routinely applied to remove pathological lesions of soft tissues, among other things, before any planned prosthetic treatment. The advantages of its usage include blood-free and sterile procedures, their small invasiveness as well as the absence of astringent scars. During the exploitation of the laser, there is a possibility that the laser beam is accidentally directed at tooth hard tissues. Aim of the study. To analyze the effect of the CO2 laser radiation on the structure of the root cementum as well as its elemental composition. Material and methods. The material used for tests included molar teeth which had not been affected by the carious process, and extracted due to periodontal indications or disrupted eruption. Fragments were cut out from the root part of the tooth and samples of similar sizes of 4 mm x 4 mm x 2 mm were prepared. The tests were conducted in four groups; the samples were subjected to the laser radiation with diversified power and frequency of the beam. In each group, five tests were carried out with a specific type of laser radiation. The examinations of the surface of the cementum were conducted with the aid of ultra-high resolution scanning electron microscope cooperating with the dispersion analyzer of X-radiation. Results. The microscope pictures of surfaces and elemental analyses showed differences in particular groups. Conclusion. The CO2 laser light damages the structure of the cementum irreversibly regardless of the applied value of power or frequency of radiation. The microscope analysis and changes in the elemental composition of the tested samples indicate the necessity of the conservative therapy of the root structure defects which developed under the influence of the activity of the CO2 laser.
