EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF COMMERCIAL MOUTH-RINSE SOLUTION ON THE MICROHARDNESS OF VARIOUS COMPOSITE RESTORATIVE MATERIALS: AN IN-VITRO STUDY

Journal Title: Journal of Advanced Medical and Dental Sciences Research - Year 2017, Vol 5, Issue 6

Abstract

Background: Dental composite forms one of the mainstays of restorative dentistry. Aqueous environment in the oral cavity have some amount of effect on the microhardness of the resin composite restorative materials. So this study aimed to evaluate the impact of potassium-nitrate containing mouth-rinses on the microhardness of composite restorative materials. Materials & Methods: The present study included assessment of effect of potassium-oxalate containing mouth-rinse on the micro-hardness of resin composite restorative materials. Silorance, high molecular weight Kalore (Japan) and Filtek (USA) materials were used for the present study and compared. A total of 135 cylindrical specimens were formulated collectively for the present study. The prepared specimens, after the baseline measurements, were divided randomly into three study groups based on the type of resin composite restorative material used. Measurement of the Knoop hardness was done at three different sites on each of the specimen and mean value was obtained. All the pre- and post-immersion data were recorded and analyzed. Results: Filtek materials had the highest value of microhardness at the baseline time followed by Silorane and lastly by Kalore. No significant effect of mouth-rinses was observed in the present study on any of the type of composite restorative material used. Conclusion: In-vivo studies are required for standardizing the effect of mouth-rinses on the microhardness of composite materials as significant amount of difference do exist in between the artificial in-vitro environment and oral cavity.
