EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COMBINED MAGNETOSTIMULATION AND VIBROACOUSTIC THERAPY TREATMENT IN LOW BACK PAIN AND RANGE OF MOTION OF THE LUMBAR SPINE IN PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS WITH LOW-BACK PAIN
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 3
Abstract
Background. Low back pain syndrome is the most common cause of chronic pain and ab sen teeism of physical workers. The diseases affecting the osteoarticular and muscular systems, as well as the connective tissue, are the cause of 11.4% of all sickness absences in the working population. In most cases, back pain occurs first as acute pain, which turns in time into chronic one. The main objective of the research was to evaluate the effectiveness of combined magnetic stimulation and vibroacoustic therapy in lower back pain treatment, and its influence on the range of motion of the spine in male patients with chronic low back pain.Material and methods. The sample comprised forty male patients with chronic low back pain. The patients where divided into four randomized groups, ten patients each. The randomized groups did not show large deviations in terms of age, profession and duration of pain symptoms. All groups underwent a 10 day trial treatment that consisted of two procedures, as follows: magnetic stimulation and vibroacoustic therapy, double magnetostimulation therapy, double vibroacoustic therapy, double vibroacoustic therapy combined with infrared radiation. Before and after the research trial, every patient was tested for pain intensity, range of motion in the lumbar spine and general quality of live. Results. We observed a substantial decrease in pain intensity, improvement of the range of motion in the lumbar spine and improvement of the general quality of life in each group. The biggest improvement was found in the group that was treated with combined magnetostimulation and vibroacoustic therapy, while in the other groups, where only one form of therapy was applied, the improvement was less pronounced.Conclusions. The male patients with chronic back pain, treated with combined magnetostimulation and vibroacoustic therapy, showed significant improvement of the range of motion in the lumbar spine and decrease in pain symptoms compared with the patients treated with magnetostimulation or vibroacoustic therapy only.
