Abstract

Background. Nordic walking is a modern form of spending free time and the correct technique of walking, with longer steps and wide arm movements, acłivates over 90% of human muscłes. The aim of the study was to evaluate nordic walking effectiveness in weight reduction.Material and methods. The study incłuded 31 people aged 40-50 years (45,2± 3,8 years), citizens of Wrocław. The subłects participated in the 4-month nordic walking trainings twice a week for 60 minutes. At the beginning and the end of the study the basic anthropometric measurements: body mass, height, waist and hip circuits were conducted.Results. At the beginning the average weight was 80,4±16,6 kg and BMI indicated overweight or obesity in study group. At the end, the weight statistically significantly decreased (p>0,001) by about 3.4% (to 77,1±14,7 kg). Greater weight loss was observed in men (3,9%), alłhough they had not declared a change in eating habits during training period. The weight loss significantly affected BMI in men who were classified as obese at the beginning of the trałning as, on completion of the training, BMI classified them as overweight. BMI reduction amounted to 4,6% in men and 3,2% in women. The waist and hip circumferences decreased by about 2 cm in the whole group.Conclusions. Nordic walking can be recognized as a safe and effective form of training in weight reduction and the non-pharmacological method of treating obesity.
