Evaluation of the effectiveness of models for discrimination analysis to predict financial risk of listed companies

Abstract

One of the fundamental problems that the managers of a modern enterprise face is to identify effective methods of assessing the financial condition of a company and warning against the threat to the continuation of its operations. In an enterprise decision-making and flexible reaction to change is becoming more and more complicated. The use of tools allowing early identification of risk of bankruptcy has become necessary in the process of managing an enterprise. Discrimination analysis is helpful in this regard and has become an increasingly popular tool; however, due to co-existence of several forecasting models of financial risk, choosing the best of these models is problematic. The aim of the paper is to verify the effectiveness of the Polish models, based on discrimination analysis, to predict bankruptcy and assess the financial condition of listed companies. Nine of the most common and most widely used models have been selected and their values have been calculated on the basis of the financial statements of 50 companies selected from the database of Emerging Markets Information Service―Poland. The research has shown that the analyzed prognostic models have a high predictive value. Of all the models subjected to “the test of effectiveness,” the best model proved to be the one by Elżbieta Mączyńska which showed the highest predictive accuracy.
