Evaluation of the exposure of a Polish consumer to tea-origin lead

Journal Title: Zarządzanie i Finanse - Year 2012, Vol 10, Issue 3

Abstract

The article is a presentation of methods present in literature of evaluation of consumer exposure to heavy metals and the impact of lead on health. A method of evaluation of the exposure to lead being a food contaminant has been presented. For this purpose we used data on the heavy metal content in tea which could be found in literature, our own laboratory research, data on the amount of tea consumption and the amount of lead passed into the brew. The evaluations vary widely depending on the assumptions used, despite the fact that every time a median of the results for various assumptions considering lead extraction from leaves into the brew has been taken into account. On the assumption that an annual consumption of tea in Poland is on average 1,5 kg per person and tea is consumed regularly by 50% of population, an average exposure to lead contained in tea per person is 1,2% to almost 3,2% PTWI. Assuming that an annual consumption of tea in Poland is on average 1,2 kg per person and tea is consumed regularly by 80% of population, an average exposure to lead contained in tea per person is 0,6% to almost 1,6% PTWI. Because of the fact that in most of countries tea consumption is very low, the estimated values of lead exposure are mostly low. The methodology presented in the paper can be used to evaluate risk concerning heavy metals in any food product.
