EVALUATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES OF PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIANS ON PREOPERATIVE EVALUATION
Journal Title: Çukurova Anestezi ve Cerrahi Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2019, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
Aim: Preoperative evaluation is to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the patient in order to determine the patient's risks, medical conditions and plan to optimize medical care, rather than improving the patient completely. Preoperative evaluation is a multidisciplinary phenomenon and one of the few models that are valid in the world is the primary care physician model. In this model, preoperatively evaluation is carried out by the family physician, internalist, or cardiologist in consultation with the surgeon. In this study, the aim was to measure the level of knowledge of primary care family physicians about preoperative evaluation with a questionnaire. Materials and Methods: A standardized questionnaire adapted from the 2011 European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) recommendations on preoperative evaluation of adults undergoing non-cardiac surgery which was updated in 2018, questioning their sociodemographic characteristics and knowledge, attitudes and practices on preoperative evaluation via online survey form was applied to family physicians working in Adana city center. Results: 62.50% of the participants stated that family physicians should be responsible for the preoperative evaluation of their patients. In the questionnaire, the categories with low level of knowledge score were coagulation disorders (50.01%), cardiovascular disease (61.87%) and renal disease (67.19%), while high scoring categories were obesity (87.51%), anemia (87.51%), and respiratory disease (75.01%). The mean correct answer level was 71.40%. Conclusion: This study showed that although the primary care physicians are knowledgeable about preoperative evaluation, a better defined perioperative medical curriculum is needed in primary care physician education programs and more education is needed for primary care physicians.
