Evolution and development prospects of women’s multi-event discipline

Journal Title: Rozprawy Naukowe Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego we Wrocławiu - Year 2007, Vol 25, Issue 1

Abstract

The paper presents the history of development of women’s multi-event discipline since 1922, i.e. when the first international competition took place. The authors analysed changes in its components (first pentathlon, then heptathlon) and their impact on the requirements for the competitors. The analysis of the results gained by the competitors of the last five Olympic Games, from Seoul to Athens (gold winners, best three and best eight) revealed that in all the examined groups the final result was most affected by the long jump, hurdle race, and the high jump, and to a lesser degree – by the 200m race. The lowest score was in the javelin throw and shot-put. One may say that the results in women’s heptathlon depend predominantly on sports of speed-power nature followed by endurance events and power-speed ones. It is planned to introduce women’s decathlon in sports events of utmost prestige. It seems that for a while the scores in the new sports may remain quite average (discus throwing and the pole vault) which will affect the final result. For this reason it will be far more vital than it was in heptathlon to adequately set proportions between teaching motor abilities and technique. The added disciplines, except for the 100m race, will require very good technical preparation which will be indispensable for scoring well both in particular disciplines as well as for the total result.
