EXAMPLES FROM THE FIGURATIVE CERAMIC FILTERS IN FATIMID PERIOD

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 52

Abstract

The most numerous and richest ornamental examples of the ceramic filters in the Islamic art are seen in the art of Fatımi. Vegetative, geometric, calligraphic, architectural and figurative ornamentations are seen in the Fatimid ceramic filters. Unlike the filters that were made in other periods, the ceramic filters in the Fatimid period are noteworthy, especially with their figurative decorations. They are divided into three main groups: human, animal and fantastic creatures. Human figures in the filters take attention with their disproportionate body forms. Examples of animal figures are hares, elephants, gazelles, lions, camels, peacocks, geese, parrots, and not fully identifiable fish and bird species. All of the imaginary creature figures that can be detected are human head birds. In this study, figurative ceramic filters in Fatimid art, evaluated in terms of technique and decoration, and compared with similar examples in its near periods.
