Experimental and theoretical study on a new semi-active control system

Journal Title: Science Paper Online - Year 2007, Vol 2, Issue 9

Abstract

This paper presents a new semi-active control system, namely, active variable stiffness • damping (AVS•D) system. Parameters of the AVS•D device are optimized to maximally amplify deformation of dampers. A predictive optimal control algorithm is proposed and therefore determine the switch states of the AVS•D device. In order to investigate the control performance of the AVS•D system, a shaking table test of the AVS•D device installed on a one-story steel frame is conducted. Results show that the AVS•D control system is very effective in reducing responses of the controlled structure, outperforming both concomitant passive-on and passive-off control systems. The AVS•D system is an economical, reliable and effective control system with a good prospect of engineering application in the near future.
