EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL WEAR ANALYSIS OF THIN CERAMIC COATINGS IN TRIBOLOGICAL CONTACT

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 238, Issue 4

Abstract

The article presents the model used to predict wear of thin ceramic coatings working in tribological contact. The model is based on the Archard wear law and contact mechanics. The cooperation of elements in the ball/plane system in the elastic deformation range was established. Wear simulations were compared with the results obtained from tribological tests in a ball-on-disc machine. The tribological pair consisted of TiN coating or nc-WC/aC and nc-TiN/aC composite coatings as the discs and alumina ball with diameter of 1mm as the counterpart. Microscopic observations and grove profiles analysis shows abrasion as the dominant mechanism of wear. This model allows the estimation of the durability of ceramic coatings based on the mechanical properties of material and friction parameters.
