Exploitation of the platelet rich fibrin (PRF) potential in paedodontics
Journal Title: Nowa Stomatologia - Year 2015, Vol 20, Issue 1
Abstract
Based on literature, the exploitation of the potential of platelet rich fibrin (PRF) in many branches of dentistry, in particular in paedodontics, has been described. Platelet rich fibrin is a platelet concentrate collected directly from the patient, thus being biocompatible. Due to several growth factors – cytokines present in the fibrin structure – it shows a great angiogenic and proliferation potential. In paedodontics, an important issue is to treat permanent teeth with the not completely developed apex where carious or posttraumatic pulp damage occurred. In such a case, the aim is to provide conditions for the further formation of the apex through leaving a fragment of pulp in the apical region, chamber pulp extirpation (pulpotomy), apexification or revascularization. Platelet rich fibrin can be successfully used in each of those procedures.Platelet rich fibrin is a spectacular biocompatible preparation supporting many branches of dentistry. It is of particular importance in the treatment of immature teeth. Obtaining the preparation neither requires a specialist procedure nor increases costs; hence, it is worth attention as a method of treatment.
