Clinical evaluation of restorations filled in Equia system – two-year observations

Journal Title: Nowa Stomatologia - Year 2015, Vol 20, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction. Advantages of glass ionomer cements such as long-term fluoride release, chemical adherences to dental tissues or bio-compatibility are known for a long time. Although their use is limited due to the low mechanical strength. Because of number of research there is a lot of new glass ionomer cements with improved physical properties. Consequently, they are frequently used and have a wider field of application.Aim. The aim of the study was clinical evaluation of restorations filled in Equia system.Material and methods. 136 rest orations were placed (class I and II cavities) in patients aged 3-23 years. Clinical evaluation of 43 fillings (20 in permanent and 23 in primary teeth) was performed after 24 months using modified Ryge’s scale.Results. Assessing the marginal integrity, anatomical shape and smoothness it was found that all the fillings in permanent teeth were clinically acceptable. Two fillings were not accepted because of the color. Analysis of restorations in primary dentition showed that marginal integrity of 17 fillings was very good or satisfactory. Assessing the anatomical shape 18 fillings obtained acceptance and in the evaluation of smoothness 20 of them. Color of 5 fillings was unacceptable.Conclusions. Equia can be used as a filling in primary teeth and in the small cavities in permanent teeth also.
