Exploring the Hate Language: An Analysis of Discourses Against the LGBTQIA+ Community

Journal Title: Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal - Year 2023, Vol 8, Issue 6

Abstract

The concept of this research was to analyze the occurrence of racism through the use of hate speech in the comments against the LGBTQIA+ community on Facebook as a platform. The researchers used the qualitative approach and discourse analysis to uncover thoughts or ideas to dive deeper into the problem and to have a substantial understanding of the social phenomenon explored in the study. Analysis of the data found out that there are dominant speech patterns in the discourses, and the discourse makers used specific discursive strategies in expressing their hate speech. Moreover, the use of generalized hate speech patterns can be grouped into the following: archaic, class, disability, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, and sex orient. These classifications determine the nature of racism, as evidenced by the context found in the selected discourses. Besides these speech patterns, it was also found out that the discourse makers used specific discursive strategies in expressing their hate speech. These are the nomination strategy, predicational strategy, argumentation strategy, discourse representation, intensifying, and mitigation strategies. After analyzing the collected comments against the LGBTQIA+ community on Facebook, it reveals that the hate speech patterns help identify the core of hate speech. Discursive components could be instrumental in determining how random individuals express their hate speech to the members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
