Fabrication of Conducting Polymer Nanotubes/wires via a Reactive Self-Degraded Template

Abstract

Polypyrrole nanotubes with high electric conductivity and azo function have been fabricated in high yield via an in-situ polymerization. During the process fibrillar complex of FeCl3 and methyl orange (MO), acting as a reactive self-degraded template, directed the growth of polypyrrole on its surface and promoted the assembly into hollow nanotubular structures. Cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), was introduced into the system to control the size and morphology of PPy nanotubular/wire structures. The effect of the concentration of CTAB and different surfactant species on the initial template and subsequent polymerization process of pyrrole was investigated systematically. Polyaniline nanotubes were also synthesized via MO-FeCl3 fibrillar complex, which acted as conventional “hard templates” in this case and can be removed easily by simple washing.
