Journal Title: International Journal of Management Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 7, Issue 1

Abstract

The issue of leadership and its impact on organisational performance is one that has attracted large amount interest among researchers because the styles adopted are very important for goal attainment. However, there are dearth of empirical research on strategic leadership and performance relationship in small and medium enterprises in Nigeria. The objective of this study is to study is to examine strategic leadership factor as a panacea to performance improvement of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Data was collected through survey on a sample of 550 owners/managers of registered and active SMEs in three states of southwest namely Ondo, Osun and Ekiti. The collected data were analysed through Multivariate Regression analysis and the results showed that a positive and significant relationship exists between strategic leadership styles and owner’s satisfaction, sales growth, profit and employment growth. However, no significant relationship was found between strategic leadership styles and market share. It is recommended that owners and managers of SMEs must pay more attention to the management of their enterprise by exhibiting both transactional and transformational skills in order to contribute more employment generation and particularly, make the sector constitutes a larger share in the economy.
