Journal Title: Revista Eugenio Espejo - Year 2024, Vol 18, Issue 3

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the underlying and basic factors associated with chronic malnutrition in children from the northern highlands of Peru. The study was quantitative, explanatory and cross-sectional, developed with a sample of 293 children selected by stratified probability sampling, in rural (n=101) and urban (n=192) areas. Chronic malnutrition was determined by anthropometry and the use of Anthro v.3.2.2-WHO software, anemia by hemoglobin dosage, and the remaining variables were collected in a data sheet (child and mother module) and a home survey applied to mothers. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Universidad Nacional de Cajamarca. Chronic malnutrition affected 37.5 % of the children. Underlying factors were present in more than 30 % of the children with chronic malnutrition, while basic factors were present in 45.7 %. On average, each category of interest affected 25 % of chronically malnourished children. All factors analyzed at the bivariate level were associated with chronic malnutrition, except for the child's age (p=0.427); meanwhile, the multivariate analysis showed a considerable reduction in association, with only 9 of 29 categories associated with chronic malnutrition. There was a significant association at the bivariate level, but it decreases at the multivariate level. The factors associated with chronic undernutrition are linked to the country's social inequalities, where the poor populations.
