Factors associated with hemodialysis attrition in Peru
Journal Title: Revista Eugenio Espejo - Year 2024, Vol 18, Issue 3
Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a public health problem that affects a person's quality of life. The study aimed to identify the factors associated with hemodialysis dropout in patients from a public hospital in the central mountains of Peru. The study used a quantitative, analytical, prospective, and cross-sectional approach and was carried out at the Hermilio Valdizán Medrano Regional Hospital in Huánuco, Peru. The sample population consisted of 81 patients diagnosed with CKD and with the indication for hemodialysis. It was evaluated using a validated questionnaire (∞ 0.923). The Chi-Square test, Fisher test, and bivariate logistic regression were applied in the inferential analysis. There was a more significant proportion of married people,(26) 32.1% , who did not abandon treatment compared to the rest who did abandon treatment hemodialysis (Fisher p=0.027). The fact of not having the ability to buy private medications (you have SIS, where your medications are free) (OR=0.233; p=0.005) was the protective factor, and not having money to travel to the establishment (OR=0.255; p=0.008) this was a risk factor. It was concluded by indicating that there are protective and risk factors associated with dropping out of hemodialysis.
