Factors interfering in sleep quality of hospitalized patients

Journal Title: Revista Eletronica de Enfermagem - Year 2011, Vol 13, Issue 3

Abstract

Sleep disorders are frequent complaints in hospitalized patients and may complicate their recovery. This research aimed to identify these complaints and to propose measures to improve the quality of sleep. This is a, cross-sectional study, in which 52patients were interviewed using two questionnaires, being one on socioeconomic data and the other on sleep. The results showed that most respondents had difficulties to sleeping, nighttime sleep disruption and daytime naps. The latency mean and total sleep time were: 50 min. and 324 min, respectively. Most considered that sleep in the hospital is as good as at home. However, the data suggest that patients had insomnia during the hospitalization, which can be explained by the fact that they have altered perception in relation to sleep problems. It proposes that nursing interventions can assist in reconciling spontaneous sleep quality.
