«FAERIE» – STORIES ABOUT TRAVEL BEYOND LIMITS (on the material of british literature)

Abstract

Based on the theories of J. Campbell, V. Propp, A. van Gennep, and J. R. R. Tolkien, the article deals with the specifics of stories created in the Faërie mode which is the most common in fantasy literature. The author defines the place of this type of story among the wide variety of ‘magical stories’. The main distinctive characteristic influencing all levels of storytelling is a particular type of magic operating in such texts – magic of fairy creatures, inborn and untaught, an integral part of their nature. Further the article provides analysis of the overall structure of a Faërie story, which is based on J. Campbell’s ‘monomyth’, and is modelled through the eponymous ‘magic code’. The latter consists of chronotope, system of personages, general storyline, narrative strategies, type of magic involved and problematics of the story. Particular attention is paid to the specifics of the functioning of magical characters and their interaction with other characters of such story though it is stressed that the centre of the system of personages is a Hero whose quest is the most important structural element of a Faërie story. This quest may have two forms: ‘rite of passage’ (outer quest) and ‘ritual of initiation’ (inner quest), making this type of ‘magical stories’ an embodiment of a ‘travel beyond limits’ (real or imaginary). The conclusion stresses the importance and popularity of this type of ‘magic stories’ in the contemporary cultural situation as a means to overcome traumatic pressure of desacralization.
