FANTASY ELEMENTS IN THE POSTMODERN NOVELS «TILO TM» BY V. GRANETSKAYA AND «THE STRAIN» BY G. DEL TORO AND C. HOGA

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the origin of fantasy, its connection with mythology and folk tales. The types of heroes are distinguished — werewolves and vampires as fantasy characters. The chronotope features marked by manifestations of postmodernism are actualized. The postmodern novel by V. Granetskaya «Tilo TM», that was released in 2013, includes elements of fantasy. The action takes place in modern times, but this modernity is modeled by the author, it is unreal, mythologized, fantastic. To convince the reader of the authenticity of the described events, the author introduces the elements of national mythology, the chronotope of the road that unite the past and the future, creating a unique chronotope of the novel. The main character of the novel Yurko possesses the magic ability of transformation — he is a werewolf, but it is a fundamentally different type of werewolf — the «conscious» werewolf that turns into a wolf at will to protect, revenge, and punish. Such a werewolf is aware of its human traits, he does not forget about them. In the postmodern novel «The Strain» (2010) by G. del Toro and C. Hogan events also occur in modern times, that are geographically, topographically well-defined and has clear time characteristics. However, an unpredictable and devastating disease, which threatens humankind, is vampirism. By introducing the folk motive of vampirism, the authors create parreality, which is described on the pages of the novel. The authors introduced the type of a new hero of the «unconscious» vampire, and fairy-tale and mythological motives, legends are introduced to create parreality, where the main crime is not against one person, but against humanity for the sake of immortality. Fairy-tales and mythological elements ensure the truthfulness of the novel, creating an illusion of authenticity of events. Fantasy, being rather young and modern, is closely connected with much more ancient layers of culture — the mythology, that is the basis for fantasy literature. The fantasy genre is also associated with a fairy tale that provides intertextual connections, defines the plot and the figurative side of the novel.
