Abstract
The article addresses the issues of studying Internet-communication and digital genres, an example of which is tweeting. The language serving Internet-communication has become the subject of research of a new field of linguistics – Internet-linguistics and Internet genres – the subject of research of digital genre studying. The paper discusses the main features of hybridity of the genre twitting in English Internet-communication. They cover, first of all, the combination of two traditional forms of speech – oral and written. It is closely connected with another display of hybridity in twitting – simultaneously synchronous and asynchronous nature of communication. The main characteristics of the written speech in the genre cover the ability to communicate mainly by means of graphic symbols, remoteness of communicants, absence of the visual contact, presence of hypertext and the ability to correct the text. The peculiarities of the verbal component of the genre, which cannot be attributed to the written speech, cover such characteristics as the use of smileys and emoticons; multiple usage of punctuation marks; writing words and sentences with capital letters; multiple usage of letters in words; alphanumeric spelling of words. However, in Internet-communication, these forms of speech are closely interconnected with each other, and, despite their unity, they are characterized by their own unique features, which makes it possible to speak about the emergence of a new hybrid form of speech – oral-written. Another feature of hybridity in twitting is its ability to realize various communicative functions in one message. There is also such feature of hybridity as a high level of multimedia content – the possibility to use both verbal texts consisting of words and sentences, and graphic elements, animation, photos, audio and video information. Thus, the development of Internet technologies opens up new opportunities in the field of communication, forms a number of problems to be solved by linguists. One of them is the problem of defining the criteria for identifying digital genres, their analysis and studying the peculiarities of the language functioning in a new communicative environment under the influence of Internet technologies.
