Abstract
The author of the article analyzes the peculiarities of the formation of the rustic discourse in Ukrainian and Polish literatures of the 19thcentury. In particular, attention was focused on the study of national-specific features of Ukrainian and Polish literature in the context of their historical development. The analysis of literary and literary-criticism materials gave as an opportunity to conclude that rustic discourse was formed in Ukrainian literature earlier than in Polish and had immeasurably more importance for its establishment and life in the 19th century. Polish writers turned to the image of their own peasants, primarily in the context of showing social injustice and exploitation of a person in feudal, and later in a capitalist society, whereas in Ukrainian literature the values of the peasantry are predominantly native-forming, and its role is to preserve and sacralize the foundations of national being, language, culture and is the key to its further existence as a historical community
